Maersk Line UK has been honoured in the East of England Regional Business in the Community Awards 2010 with an award for Work Inspiration’. The winners were announced at the East of England Awards Gala Dinner at Hengrave Hall in June.
BITC had shortlisted employers who are turning Work Experience into Work Inspiration through the placements they provide for young people. The Maersk Line UK Import Customer Service Management team in Felixstowe was nominated for the work they had been doing with West Suffolk College and Career Academies UK.
Russell Harvey, Import Customer Service Manager has been the driving force behind the initiative. He said: “It is an honour for us to have won this award after being shortlisted with some of the best companies in the East of England."
The team has been working with West Suffolk College and Career Academies UK since 2007. They have provided work internships for College students over that period. In addition they have mentored a number of students enrolled in the Career Academy programme, which aims to inspire young people to stay in Further Education and build upon their ambition.
Russell Harvey said:“We have given a lot of time to this initiative over the last two years and benefited significantly as a department by being involved and mentoring the young students.
“This initiative has allowed us to give something back to the local community while also developing our own staff; a real win-win situation.”
Business in the Community Awards recognise, reward and celebrate the impact businesses from across the East of England have on society and the local community.
The Regional Awards, together with the Regional Awards for Excellence 2010, will be presented to those companies who have made a significant impact in the workplace, the marketplace, on the environment and in the local community.
