Apprenticeships in Building Services

Apprenticeships in Building Services are aimed at people aged 16 plus with no upper age restriction, who are involved in a broad range of plumbing and electrical activities.

Course Aims:

The Apprenticeship programme is ideally suited for people who have an interest in Building Services and wish to pursue it as a career, it will also provide high levels of training to become a professional worker within their chosen field.

Entry Requirements:

  • Available from the age of 16 (with no upper age restriction)
  • Employment in the Plumbing area prior to the course start date
  • Satisfactory Interview
  • Satisfactory Initial Assessments

Course Content:

As Apprentices and Advanced Apprentices you will work towards a framework that is tailored in the areas that are specific to your job. The skills acquired will be practices and developed both at College and in the workplace.

The framework comprises of:

  • NVQ Level 2 and 3 in chosen occupation area
  • Technical Certificate in either Electrotechnical Technical Technology (level 2&3)
  • Basic Plumbing Studies at level 2 or Advanced Plumbing Studies
  • Key Skills in Communication, Application of Number and IT at level 1 or 2
  • Employment Rights and Responsibilities

The duration of the Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships can range from 2 to 4 and a half years.

Assessment:

Assessments will take place in college and in the workplace to industry standard.

Progression:

Once qualified to an advanced level, there are a number of opportunities to progress to a Foundation Degree. As a qualified electrician you could work as a Kitchen and Bathroom Fitter, Industrial Electrician, Electrical Engineering Technician, Building Services Engineering, Shop fitter or an Estimator. As a qualified plumber you can work in a number of different areas, including heating and ventilation, refrigeration and air-conditioning, gas servicing and kitchen and bathroom fitting. It could also enable you to own your own business or work abroad.
